Hi Joseph, I live in Austin, TX and have been scrolling through your wonderful blog. I find North Korea to be depressing and much of what I see appears scripted and not unlike some kind of “performance.” The coordinated colors, group dances, and the physical similarity of those fortunate enough to be in a tour guide’s photo log are revealing in a very unsettling way. Would you not agree?

Now that my hometown is on the apparent target list for the DRPK, I am officialally creeped out.

    • It’s an entirely different society, individualism does not officially exist – although of course you do witness it at times as I believe some of my pictures do show.

Last thing you should worry about is being hit by a missile from DPRK – not going to happen no matter how much the media makes you want to believe its on the agenda.

I did not witness a country preparing for war; the soldiers were out planting trees and building houses, the people of Pyongyang were overhauling the sidewalks.

Thanks. My concern, I think is that tensions are so high that one inadvertent human error could cause a conflict. Yes, we in Austin know their declarations are empty threats. The local and social media are having a field day with the ridicule. Truly, the “map” does more to undermine them than any rhetoric.

I am hoping China will step up and rein them in. Ugh. I think you might consider your father’s advice and head to Cuba (that is the mom in me talking).

    Best wishes,
